Couch Series

I have two good friends who have started a standing dinner date at my house every couple of weeks. Jack loves it when Auntie C (Christabel) and Auntie Dar (Linda) come over, and Stella gets all excited at the opportunity for more pats. Mom loves the good company and friendship they've provided through these past several weeks, and the bonus of a homecooked meal when they come over!

Sleeping Beauty

Ring A Ding Ding

If you are of a certain age, you might remember those pull toys from Fisher-Price that look like a rotary phone and ring-a-ding-ding when you dial a number.

I had one. And now Jack has one too. It was given to him by one of his cousins and he can't put it down. I have no idea how he even knows what to do with a rotary phone that has a separate headpiece. Certainly doesn't look like an iPhone.

Anyway, we have it in the car and he has taken to calling his friends from school, his bunny rabbit, lovey, and Lola. On this day he called Sophia, a friend from school.

Keeping Bunny Warm

I walk Stella each night with Jack in the stroller. Tonight Jack decided to bring his Bunny and Lovey -- and keep them warm in his jacket.

A Fall Visit From Lola

When Lola found out that Jack does yoga in school,
they did some poses together.
I've been under a lot of stress lately and unfortunatley when Jack and I were going to visit Boston last week, that stress manifested itself in my back and it "went out". I landed in bed, incapacitated in pain, in the same clothes and hyped up on muscle relaxants for nearly 3 days. Tom's cousin, Kerrie, thankfully drove from Sacramento to stay with me and helped me back on my feet, emotionally and physically.

Someone's tired but it's not Jack
In the meantime, Mom immediately booked a flight to relieve Kerrie and help take care of Jack and me. My back became stronger over the week and Mom was able to help take care of me, Jack, and a million other things that I wouldn't have been able to get to myself for either lack of physical strength due to my back, having Jack underfoot, or just plain procrastination. We waded through Dad's voluminous paperwork which was taking up a box and a suitcase in the corner of my bedroom and I've been avoiding for months, stocked up at Costco so I don't need toilet paper or paper towels for another several weeks, brought boxes to the recycler and clothes to Goodwill, etc. In the end, these turned out to be silver linings in my cancelled trip to Boston.

By the end of the week, my back was feeling better and we drove to Sacramento to visit with Tom's cousins and stayed overnight. We had dinner with cousins Kathy and Barry and visited with Kerrie and Amber. We drove to Apple Hill on Friday morning for some Fall activities. Apple Hill is about an hour's drive from Sacramento towards Lake Tahoe in the Sierra Foothills. Rustic and full of 50 or so orchards, the area has grown to include a winery, micro-brewery, and Christmas tree farms.

It was a perfectly crisp Fall day yesterday and slightly muddy from a few days of rain. Jack went through his first Hay Maze, and had his face and hand painted with glittery spiders and a spider web. We fed the goats, sheep, and cows and managed to lose a plastic glow-bracelet in the chicken coop resulting in a paniced beckon to the groundskeeper to remove it before the chickens started pecking at it. Jack picked pumpkins from a pumpkin patch and we came home with a box of Empire apples (for Stella, an apple a day!), cider, pumpkins, and a pie.

First day of Preschool

Jack started his first day of Preschool this week. I packed up his dog sleeping bag, lovey, extra clothes and some pullups for naptime. And off we went.

For a week or so, we talked about how he was a Big Boy and would be going to school. School was fun where he would make new friends and learn fun things. He was totally into it.

On the first day, every kid gets a cubby with his picture. We put Jack's things there, took off his coat, and he wandered in to play cars with another little boy.

There are a dozen kids - three of them new - in his class. One of the teachers called me after an hour or so with an update. No problems, he was having a great time.

I wondered how he would take a nap with all those kids in the same room. So I called. No problems, he went to sleep easily and when he woke up, he stayed quietly in recognition that others were still asleep.

Jack's Preschool program is a full-time play-based, Reggio Emilia inspired program focusing on preparing  him for kindergarten and beyond.

When we arrive around 8:30am, the kids transition into the day with some free-form play time with the toys, books, cars, etc. Each day has a different theme: art, cooking, music & movement, science, etc. There's "circle time" where the teacher's start off the day with a song, game, story, etc. and an activity of the day. Then the kids head outdoors to the playground or park. Followed by lunch and snacks, which are provided. Nap/quiet time follows. After naptime, the kids can opt to choose activities on the patio with wheeled toys, bubbles, balls or head inside to the classroom for structured activities.

Today, I dropped off Jack and he ran inside to play without even looking back. One more milestone under the belt.

Stella Returns

Lest you forget how beautiful Miss Stella is, or you are just a card-carrying member of her fan club and can't get enough of her, here's a couple of recent pictures. She is now 3 years, 7 months. She has maintained her girlish 55 pound figure with a grain-free diet and daily off-leash exercise at the beach and woods. Just as she did as a puppy, she will plant herself on the sidewalk, bat her big brown eyes, and stare down someone if she believes they will give her pats. She has quite a bi-coastal fan-club and people on the street still ask if they can take a picture of her with their phone.
